Brown Sugar (packed) – mL to Grams (g) Converter

Brown Sugar (packed): mL to Grams (g) Converter

Brown Sugar (packed) is lighter than water, so 1 mL does not simply equal 1 gram. This converter uses the real density of brown sugar (packed) (about 0.96 g per mL) to turn any volume you enter into an accurate weight.

How to Convert Brown Sugar: mL to Grams and Grams to mL

Brown sugar packs unevenly, so a lot of home bakers end up unsure whether their scoop and their scale actually agree. If you’re converting brown sugar between mL and grams (or the other way around), here’s the number that matters: packed brown sugar has a density of about 0.96 g per mL.

The Formula (Both Directions)

mL to grams: Weight (g) = Volume (mL) × 0.96

Grams to mL: Volume (mL) = Weight (g) ÷ 0.96

So 100 mL of packed brown sugar weighs 96 grams, and if a recipe instead gives you 96 grams, that converts back to 100 mL.

One Thing to Consider

“Packed” is the key word here. Brown sugar’s density changes a lot depending on how firmly it’s pressed into the cup or spoon — loose brown sugar can weigh 20-30% less than packed. If a recipe just says “brown sugar” without specifying, packed is almost always the safe assumption.
