Somewhere out there, someone just compared a lab result in ng/mL directly against a limit written in ppm, treated the two numbers as equal, and drawn the wrong conclusion. It’s an easy trap. Both units describe tiny concentrations, both show up on the same kinds of reports, water tests, drug screens, veterinary diagnostics, and at a glance they feel interchangeable. They’re not. ng/mL is a thousand times smaller than ppm. Mixing them up doesn’t just round the number differently, it moves the decimal point three whole places.
Is ng/mL the Same as ppm?
No, and this is the part that trips people up. ng/mL isn’t equal to ppm, it’s equal to ppb, parts per billion, which is one thousand times smaller than parts per million. If a water test comes back at 50 ng/mL and you’re checking it against a limit written as 0.5 ppm, you’re actually looking at 0.05 ppm, ten times under the limit, not level with it. That gap matters.
Why ng/mL Lines Up With ppb Instead of ppm
This comes down to how the metric prefixes stack up. For a dilute, water-based solution, where the density is close to 1 gram per milliliter, ppm works out to roughly 1 milligram per liter, and ppb works out to roughly 1 microgram per liter. A nanogram is a thousand times smaller than a microgram, and a milliliter is a thousand times smaller than a liter, so those two thousand-fold shrinkages cancel out, leaving 1 ng/mL sitting exactly where 1 µg/L, meaning 1 ppb, sits. Not ppm. That’s the whole source of the confusion in one sentence: ng/mL skips right past ppm and lands on ppb.
The Actual Conversion
To go from ng/mL to ppm:
ppm = ng/mL ÷ 1000
And in reverse:
ng/mL = ppm × 1000
This approximation holds for dilute aqueous solutions, water, blood, urine, that sort of thing, where the sample’s density is close enough to 1 g/mL that the shortcut is reliable. It stops being accurate for solvents with very different densities, like oils or concentrated solutions.
Worked Examples
15 ng/mL to ppm
15 ÷ 1000 = 0.015 ppm
50 ng/mL to ppm
50 ÷ 1000 = 0.05 ppm
500 ng/mL to ppm
500 ÷ 1000 = 0.5 ppm
1,000 ng/mL to ppm
1000 ÷ 1000 = 1 ppm
That last one is worth sitting with. It takes a full 1,000 ng/mL, not 1, to equal even 1 ppm. If you’ve been eyeballing a ng/mL result against a ppm threshold as if they’re on the same scale, that’s the gap you’ve been missing.

Where This Actually Trips People Up
