Days To Months Converter

Thirty days is not quite a month, and 365 days is not quite twelve of them, which is why two calculators can give two different answers to the same question.

Quick answer: divide the days by 30.4375, the average month length. So 30 days is 0.986 month, 90 days is 2.96 months and 365 days is 11.99 months. Dividing by 30 gives slightly larger figures.

The days to months formula

The Julian year of 365.25 days divided by 12 gives an average month of 30.4375 days, so months equal days divided by 30.4375.

The Gregorian calendar average is 30.436875 days, a difference too small to matter in most sums (Wikipedia: Month).

months = days ÷ 30.4375365.25 ÷ 12

For 90 days, 90 ÷ 30.4375 is 2.957 months.

For 365 days, 365 ÷ 30.4375 is 11.992 months.

Months are not all the same length

Calendar months last 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, and the Gregorian mean month is 30.436875 days (Wikipedia: Month).

The synodic month, from one new moon to the next, is about 29.53 days, which is a different thing from a calendar month (Wikipedia: Month).

For a quick sum, dividing by 30 is common, but it overstates the months by about 1.5 percent.

How to convert days to months step by step

  1. Write the number of days.
  2. Divide by 30.4375.
  3. Round to the precision you need.
  4. For a calendar span, count whole months from the dates.

Example 1: 90 days

  1. Start with 90 days.
  2. 90 ÷ 30.4375 = 2.957.
  3. The span is about 2.96 months.

90 days = 2.957 months

Example 2: 365 days

  1. Start with 365 days.
  2. 365 ÷ 30.4375 = 11.992.
  3. The span is about 11.99 months.

365 days = 11.992 months

Example 3: 45 days

  1. Start with 45 days.
  2. 45 ÷ 30.4375 = 1.478.
  3. The span is about 1.48 months.

45 days = 1.478 months

Dividing by 30 instead would give 3 months for 90 days and 12.17 months for 365 days.

A quick mental shortcut for days to months

Divide by 30 and take off 1.5 percent, so 120 days is 4 minus 0.06, which is 3.94 months.

For a round check, 30 days is about one month and 91 days is about three.

When to divide by 30

Some billing and finance rules treat every month as 30 days, so the 30 day divisor is exact there. Check the contract wording before you pick.

For general use, the average of 30.4375 is more accurate.

Counting calendar months

From March 15 to June 15 is exactly three months, even though the number of days is 92. Count months on the calendar when a deadline names a month.

Use the average only for rough or statistical work.

Why 365 days is not 12 months

A year of 365 days holds 11.99 average months because the average month is 30.4375 days. The missing quarter day makes up the gap.

A 365.25 day year gives exactly 12.

Weeks and months

A month holds about 4.35 weeks, since 30.4375 divided by 7 is 4.348. So 13 weeks is about 3 months.

This helps with quarters and pay periods.

Days in each month

The months with 31 days are January, March, May, July, August, October and December, and the 30 day months are April, June, September and November (Wikipedia: Month). February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year.

The mnemonic Thirty days hath September helps recall them.

Months back to days

Multiply the months by 30.4375 to reverse. Three months is about 91 days and six months is about 183 days.

Use the dates when the exact day count matters.

Checking your answer

Multiply the months by 30.4375 to recover the days. If 2.957 gives 90, the sum is right.

The months figure should always be about a thirtieth of the days.

More values at a glance

0.5 days is 0.0164 months. 2 days is 0.0657 months. 5 days is 0.1643 months.

10 days is 0.3285 months. 25 days is 0.8214 months. 100 days is 3.2854 months.

Each answer is the input times 0.0329. You can use the same factor for any value that is not listed here.

The unit sizes

One of the days equals 0.0329 months. One of the months equals 30.4375 days.

If a result looks very large or very small, compare it with these sizes before you use it.

Checking in reverse

Take 0.3285 months and divide by 0.0329. You get back 10 days. If you do not, one of the numbers was typed or rounded wrongly.
